Do you ever come home from a long day of work and suddenly feel ravenous hunger coming on or the need to head straight for the pantry or fridge for the quickest and easiest snack?
A patient and I were chatting the other day about this problem which I think many others can relate to - so I decided to give you all a few tips on the matter.
If this is a problem time of day for you, the first place to start is to ask yourself the following questions:
Is this true hunger?
Am I bored?
Have I eaten enough today?
Am I actually just thirsty?
Ways to overcome these problems:
Eat regular, balanced meals throughout the day and small snacks in between
Drink lots of water through the day (try for 30-35ml/kg body weight)
Don’t have long gaps between meals (meals/snacks should be 3-5 hrs apart)
Enjoy complex carbs in small portions with all meals and snacks such as fruit or low fat/fat free yoghurt in between
Listen to your body! If it is not a true hunger then rather enjoy a cup of tea or distract yourself by going for a walk or run, calling a friend, having a hot shower or reading a good book
